FAQ's
Switching from traditional light bulbs (incandescent bulbs) to CFLs is an effective ,simple change everyonecan make right now. Making this change will help to reduce electricity consumption at home and prevent greenhouse
gas emissions ,that lead to global climate change. Lighting costs account for close to 20 percent of the average home’s
electric bill. Green Lamp CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy (electricity) than incandescent light
bulbs;last up to 10 times longer ;cost little up front; provide a quick return on investment.
If every home in the UK replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a Green Lam CFL, in one
year it would save enough energy to light more than 2 million homes .That would prevent there lease of
green house gas emissions equal to that of about 500,000
CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing – an average of 4 milligrams (mg). By
comparison, older thermometers contain about 500 milligrams of mercury – an amount equal to the mercury in
125 CFLs. Mercury is an essential part of CFLs; it allows the bulb to be an efficient light source. No mercury is
released when the bulbs are intact (not broken) or in use.
Most makers of light bulbs have reduced mercury in their fluorescent lighting products. Thanks to technology
advances and a commitment from members of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the average
mercury content in CFLs has dropped at least 20 percent or more in the past several years. Some manufacturers
have even made further reductions, dropping mercury content to 1 mg per light
The most important steps to reduce exposure to mercury vapor from a broken bulb are: 1. Before cleanup a. Have people and pets leave the room b. Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment. c. Shut off the central forced air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one. d. Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb. 2. During cleanup a. Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. b. Place cleanup materials in a seal able container. 3. After cleanup a. Promptly place all bulb debris and clean up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors. b. For several hours, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the H&AC system shut off.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression, winter blues, summer depression, summer blues, or seasonal depression, was considered a mood disorder, in which people who have no mental health problems throughout most of the year, experience depressive symptoms during a particular season, usually winter. There are many different treatments for classic (winter-based) Seasonal Affective Disorder, including light therapy with sunlight or bright lights. Photoperiod-related alterations of the duration of melatonin secretion may affect the seasonal mood cycles of SAD. This suggests that light therapy may be an effective treatment for SAD. Bright light therapy is effective with the patient sitting a prescribed distance, commonly 30–60 cm, in front of the box with her/his eyes open but not staring at the light source for 30–60 minutes. Please consult your GP if you have any questions regarding treatment for any depressive disorders you feel you may have.
